Space Invaders was released by Taito in Japan in 1978 and became so popular that it caused a nationwide shortage of 100-yen coins. The game generated over one billion dollars in its first year â a figure that helped convince the entertainment industry that video games were a serious commercial medium. It is widely credited with saving the arcade game industry after the mid-1970s slump and inspiring the home console market that followed.
The game's creator, Tomohiro Nishikado, initially designed the aliens as moving tanks, but the hardware could not render them quickly enough. He switched to simpler alien shapes that the hardware could process faster, accidentally creating the iconic alien imagery that has been referenced in popular culture thousands of times since. The speed increase as aliens are eliminated was also accidental â the processor could simply render fewer sprites more quickly â but proved so effective that it became an intentional design feature in every subsequent version.
Advanced Space Invaders strategy involves column priority and mystery ship timing. Eliminating alien columns from the outside inward keeps the formation centered longer, giving more time per pass. The mystery UFO that passes along the top yields bonus points that vary based on a hidden counter â advanced players track their shot count to predict and maximize UFO bonus values.
The four destructible shields create dynamic defensive terrain. Alien projectiles gradually destroy shield sections from above while your own shots can accidentally clear sections from below. Experienced players use remaining shield sections strategically â sheltering when multiple aliens fire simultaneously, emerging to fire during windows.
Space Invaders' influence on game design cannot be overstated. Every shooter, every wave-based game, every scoring system with persistent high scores traces heritage to this 1978 cabinet. Playing it in 2026 is simultaneously playing history and discovering why certain design principles have remained standard across 45 years of game development.
