While traditional Mahjong is a competitive multiplayer tile game played in China since the Qing Dynasty, Mahjong Solitaire was invented by Brodie Lockard in 1981 and popularized by the 1986 Activision computer game Shanghai. The 144 tiles in a standard Mahjong solitaire set include four copies each of bamboo suits (1-9), circle suits (1-9), character suits (1-9), wind tiles (East, South, West, North), dragon tiles (Red, Green, White), and flower/season tiles. Flower and season tiles match any other flower or season respectively â a special exception to the identical-match rule. Understanding all 36 tile types and their matching rules builds automatically through play.
