Diep.io adds RPG upgrade systems to the IO genre, creating a depth that most IO games lack. You control a tank, destroy geometric shapes and enemy tanks to earn experience points, and spend those points on stats like Bullet Speed, Bullet Damage, Body Damage, Max Health, Health Regeneration, Movement Speed, and Bullet Penetration.

At level 15, 30, and 45, you choose new tank classes from a branching upgrade tree. Twin doubles your fire rate, Sniper increases bullet range, Flank Guard adds a rear cannon, and dozens more branches create dozens of unique tank builds. The final class selection at level 45 produces wildly different playstyles.

Game modes include Free For All (pure competition), Teams (2 or 4 team variants), Domination (capture control points), Tag (team deathmatch), and Maze (fights in a maze environment). Each rewards different build priorities.

The combination of real-time IO action and persistent upgrade decisions creates a more strategic experience than most browser games.
