Small, quick territory grabs beat ambitious large grabs in total territory per minute. Every second your trail exists is exposure time. Complete small rectangles in 3-4 moves rather than large spirals in 15+ moves. The sum of many small safe claims exceeds one large risky claim.
Claim corners and edges first — they have natural protection from map boundaries. A corner position has two walls providing cover, meaning only two sides need defense. Expand from corners toward the center rather than starting in center and working outward.
When you see another player's trail, you can eliminate them by crossing it before they return to their territory. But approaching another player's trail also exposes your own. Only pursue trail eliminations when you can reach their trail AND return to your territory faster than they can reach yours.
Not all territory is equal. Center territory is highly contested but provides the most expansion options. Edge territory is easier to defend. Corner territory is easiest to defend but limits expansion. Ideal strategy: corner base, edge expansion, then center pressure once you have a large safe base.
Knowing when to cut a claim short and return to territory saves more total territory than completing risky claims. If you see any player's movement suggesting they'll cut your trail before you return — abort and secure what you have. Half a claim completed is better than total elimination.
